As well as being an acclaimed after dinner speaker John has personal connections with Tayport Football Club.  In 1977 he was a member of the Parkside team which defeated Tayport after three games in the Scottish Amateur Cup.  In addition he was the Police Match Commander in charge of the OVD Scottish Cup Final in 1996 at Fir Park when Tayport won the Scottish Junior Cup for the first time.
