As was the case the previous midweek, Tayport allowed their opponents to take a two-goal lead, before coming back to force a draw, on the Canniepairt. One point, however, proved to be enough to see 'Port through to the semi-finals of the DJ Laing League Cup.
Visiting Violet shocked their hosts with a ninth minute opener. A fine ball down the left flank tempted Frazer Fitzpatrick out of his box to make a tackle, only for the ball to break for striker Tennant, who rolled it into the unguarded net.
The Pansies doubled their advantage a few minutes later, when Tennant forced home a cross from the left, to leave Tayport reeling.
Fortunately, Stevie McManus, who has quickly become a firm favourite of the 'Port support, drilled a shot into the net, from the edge of the box, after Grant Manzie had won possession.
So, having halved the deficit, Tayport pushed for a leveller after the break. Barry Donachie missed at the front post, James Russell tested the 'keeper, and Brian Livie had a header cleared off the line.
On 70 minutes, Violet's Reynolds was shown a straight red card for pushing Roberto Morris, but Ronnie Kenneth, who had only just come on, got involved in the aftermath of the initial infringement, and he too saw red.
A minute later, Tayport did equalise. James Russell showed great strength to hold off Szpak, on the right flank, and his cross found Stevie McManus, who headed in his fifth goal in four games.
In a bid to notch a winner, Roberto Morris, a half-time substitute, had a volley instinctively saved by 'keeper Kelly, and the skipper's follow-up header came off the bar.
Still, with Lochee United beating North End, Tayport topped the section and now meet Arbroath Vics in the last four of the competition. |
