The Super League season got underway on Saturday, with Tayport meeting Linlithgow Rose, on the Canniepairt. The match, however, was overshadowed by the horror leg break sustained by Lithgae's Mark Bradley, with ten minutes remaining.
The game was held up for over half an hour, after Derek Wemyss and Bradley collided as they went for a loose ball, near the far touchline. Everyone at Tayport wishes the Linlithgow veteran all the best in his recovery.
Wemyss, who ironically suffered a broken leg at Linlithgow's Prestonfield eight years ago, was red-carded for the challenge, but there had been nothing malicious in his attempt to win the ball.
Once Bradley had finally been lifted into an ambulance and the game restarted, there was little conviction from either team, with Tommy Coyne going close on a couple of occasions, as Linilthgow saw out time to collect all three points.
The Rosie Posie had scored the only goal of the afternoon in the 62nd minute, shortly after Dave Baikie had introduced his substitutes. Indeed, it was one such sub, Mark Tyrell, who netted what proved to be the winner, trying his luck from 35 yards and seeing the ball beat Neal Ferrie and go in off the post.
Tayport's best chance had come in the first half, when Robbie Henderson knocked the ball on for Stevie McManus, whose low drive was blocked by a defender on the line.
McManus also fired over during the first half, while a Henderson effort was fumbled by goalkeeper McPherson. Henderson also caused a problem for former Tayport favourite, John Ward, in a race for a through-ball. The referee saw nothing amiss with the way in which Ward fended off his old team-mate, much to the frustration of the 'Port camp.
All told, a disappointing afternoon for both sides, but Lithgae at least have the consolation of victory, while Tayport will now be looking to get points on the board at Kelty, next week.
