It's now thirteen years since Tayport last savoured a win over Lochee United but for 45 minutes of this Midlands League game, it looked if that run might finally be ended. Tayport had looked the better side in the opening half and deservedly held the lead through Dayle Robertson’s goal after 20 minutes. Jamie Gill’s shot was blocked and in the ensuing scramble, Tayport’s top scorer got the final touch.
Tayport were left to rue several missed opportunities to increase their lead during the first half when Lochee levelled the scores with the last kick of the half. Tayport were caught out by Grant Lawson’s clever free kick which set up Danny Cavanagh, another former ‘Port player, to steal in to beat Gary Thain in the home goal.
The second half was altogether a different affair. Lochee served notice of what was in store when Gallacher sent Milne clear but Thain saved well. Tayport had a chance when awarded an indirect free kick inside the Lochee penalty area but Robertson’s shot from Gill’s touch was blocked by the massed defence on the six yard line.
A period of sustained attacking play from Lochee was rewarded in 56 minutes when Murray set up Hay who cut in from the left to fire a low drive past Thain and give the visitors the lead. Tayport tried hard to get back into the game but three successive corners midway through the half proved fruitless.
Lochee were calling the shots, though, and increased their lead in 81 minutes. Young substitute George Johnston scampered down the right and his cross was met first time by Kevin Milne who shot high into the net. Tayport’s fate was finally sealed in the dying seconds when Murray’s cross from the left was flicked home at the near post by Johnston to cap a fine cameo performance by the young substitute.
