With a great win last week at home, Tayport were looking to claim another 3 points, this time away to Scone Thistle. This is the second time these teams have met this season with the result being the same in both matches.
Tayport started well with chances from Paul Sludden and Ross Cameron inside the first 10 minutes. Ryan Paterson also had a chance not long after. A throw in from Bradie Heggie found Paterson who had a shot on goal but the ball flew over the crossbar. Scone Thistle’s Ben English had an opportunity for the home side, but the shot was easily saved by Tayport’s keeper Darren Brown.
A Lewis Finnie foul on Tayport’s Gordon Norrie meant the away side had a free kick early on. Paterson took it, but the ball was headed away by Scone’s English. 15 minutes in, another throw in from Heggie was picked out by Sludden who then flicked it onto Jamie Gill who headed the ball into the back of Scone’s net. However, the goal was given as offside.
Tayport got their first goal in the 21st minute thanks to Paterson. His strike from just outside of the box went right over keeper Calum Byres and into the back of his net. Scone Thistle attempted to come back with a corner from Ryan Kinnear curling in towards the goal, but again it was caught by Brown. Tayport continued to have more of the possession and chances. Gill had several great crosses into the box and even his own chance with a powerful shot that just went wide of the post. Another chance came from Norrie who had an attempt on goal with a header, but it was tipped over the bar by Scone’s Byres.10 minutes from the end of the first half, Scone Thistle had a free kick just outside the box, but Tayport captain Jamie Hume headed the ball to safety. We went into the half time break with the visitors leading 1-0.
After a lacklustre first half, the second half was much more action packed. Early shots from Sludden and Ewan White were good attempts on goal, but the ball didn’t quite find the back of the net. A free kick to Tayport from a foul by Scone’s Calum Black was a great chance for the away side, but Greg McColm’s shot found the keeper rather than the net. Another ball from Jamie McCabe to Sludden was also an opportunity for Tayport to double their lead but his shot was knocked wide by Byres.
10 minutes into the 2nd half, Tayport were unlucky with another disallowed goal. A pass from White found Norrie whose shot flew past Scone’s keeper, but the goal was ruled as offside. Tayport were definitely showing a lot more passion and this showed when they got their second goal in the 64th minute. A foul from Scone’s Elliot Williamson on Sludden, which resulted in his second yellow, meant the home side were down to 10 men. The free kick was taken by Norrie just outside of the box, who curled the ball passed the wall and into the bottom right corner of the net.
Less than 10 minutes after their second goal, Tayport got another one, this time through White. A corner to Tayport was taken by White whose shot caused a big scramble in the box, the ball was deflected back out but it found White who smashed it in the goal making the score 3-0. It was definitely a more vibrant performance as another Tayport goal came soon after. In the 80th minute new signing Greg McColm scored his first goal for the club with a simple header into the oppositions net. 87 minutes in, Sludden got his name on the goal sheet with a strike into the bottom left-hand corner of the net after an assist from White. Tayport’s final and sixth goal came in the 89th minute and it was a second goal for McColm. Another header from him went into the back of Byres’s net. Scone thistle did manage to get a goal right at the end of the match in the 90th minute through Kaim Brand. A low range shot skimmed passed Brown and into the Tayport goal. It was a much more exciting and energetic second half from both teams and the match ended Scone Thistle 1-6 Tayport FC.
Tayport’s man of the match was named as Greg McColm. It was his first start for the club and manager Eddie Wolecki Black said he was very pleased with McColm’s performance, highlighting that he did his job as a defender but also contributed well up front with his two goals.
