A new Midlands Football League season has begun! For their first game of the 2022/23 campaign, Tayport travelled to Whitton Park to face Broughty Athletic. With many new faces joining the club over the past few weeks, including new management, The Port were eager to show they were ready for the new season ahead.

Both teams started well with fast paced energy, but it was the away side who had the early chances. A fantastic cross into the box by Jim Malone was collected by Ryan Paterson who slipped the ball onto striker Adam Fraser. Fraser took a shot but Broughty keeper Sean Diamond made a great save. Another chance came from a Bradie Heggie cross to Paterson in the Broughty box. Paterson headed the ball but it went just over the crossbar. Fraser had a second opportunity to score but his shot went just wide of the post.

Despite Tayport dominating the first 15 minutes of the match, it was Broughty Athletic who got the first goal in the 16th minute. Bradley Smith made a superb run down the middle and into the box before slipping the ball past Port keeper Charlie Kennedy and into the bottom right hand corner.

Broughty grew after their goal and started to dominate the match. Rikki Gillespie crossed the ball to Smith who took a shot but it was well blocked by Port defender Greg McColm. Greig McNaughton made a great header into the box but Malone was there to clear the ball away. Broughty substitute Ruari Henry had his own chance just before the 40 minute mark, but his shot was fantastically saved by Kennedy. The teams went into the half time break with the home side leading 1-0.

Out for the second half and there wasn’t many early chances for either side. It was Broughty that had the first good chance of the half, a shot from Henry was well saved by Kennedy. Tayport came close to levelling the score when Trialist B hit the post. Paterson also had a chance from a free kick but it was an easy catch for Diamond.

In the 67th minute of the match, an accidental hand ball by Malone in the Tayport box meant Broughty Athletic received a penalty. Smith stepped up and took the penalty. Kennedy made a great save but the ball bounced back out and Smith smashed it into the back of the net. Only 20 minutes left of the match and the score was now 2-0 to the home side.

There wasn’t much action from both sides for the remainder of the game. Tayport substitutions were made which involved bringing on new singings Nik Edwards and Kyle Middleton. Paterson also had a couple of chances on goal but unfortunately he couldn’t find the back of the net. The match finished 2-0 to Broughty Athletic.

It was a difficult start to the new season for Tayport who put on an energetic performance, but they were outplayed by a strong Broughty side, who were deserving of their 3 points.
