The sun was shining at Guthrie Park this weekend as Tayport travelled to face Forfar United in the Quarter Final of the Quest Precision Engineering Cup. After a 1-0 win at home to Fraserburgh United in the last round, the Port were looking to come away with another win. The team did just that with a 0-6 thrashing of Forfar and now Tayport advance to the Semi Finals. New signing Aidan Cobb had his first start for the club, filling in for midfielder Kris Rollo.

It was a passionate and energetic start from both sides, but it was Tayport who got ahead with their first goal only 3 minutes into the match. Tayport keeper Craig Hepburn booted the ball up the field where it found Jamie Gill in the box. Gill took a shot which went over Forfar keeper Jack Shaw and into the net.

Tayport continued to challenge Forfar and the away side definitely had more of the chances. Gill’s throw in landed straight in the box but it was headed away by Forfar Captain Kieran Crichton. Paul Sludden also had an early chance but his header was easily caught by Shaw. Forfar did have a chance to equalise though. A throw in from Jamie Graham fell to Crichton who took a shot but it went too wide of the post.

However, it was the away side who got the next goal and doubled their lead in the 17th minute. A low corner from Ryan Paterson found Captain Jamie Hume in the box. Hume’s fantastic diving header flew past Shaw and into the Forfar goal making the score 0-2.

Despite being 2 goals down, Forfar continued to challenge Tayport. A free kick from Zack Williams near the corner flag landed perfectly in the box, but it was Hume who got to the ball first, clearing it out of Tayport’s half. Forfar’s defence also performed well, protecting their goal from a great header from Tayport defender Greg McColm just before the 30 minute mark.

16 year old Aidan Cobb had a fantastic chance from outside the box, which went over the crossbar, but it was Paterson who got the next Tayport goal in the 31st minute. Louis Joyce lofted the ball across the field where it found Paterson who then ran towards the goal and took a shot. Shaw got his hands on the ball but it had already crossed the goal line by the time he tried to save it. There was a little confusion amongst the players but the goal was given and now Tayport where 0-3 up.

Tayport continued to put pressure on the Forfar goal. A Joyce cross found striker Daniel Dorovic who headed the ball at the goal, but Shaw managed to tip it over the bar, resulting in a corner. Paterson took the corner and Craig Sturrock also went for a header but unfortunately it went too wide of the post.

The last chances of the first half came from Forfar United. Crichton had a shot but it was too powerful and flew over the crossbar. Lewis Headridge also had his own chance but his shot was easily saved by Tayport keeper Hepburn. The teams went into half time with Tayport leading 0-3.

Both teams came out for the second half with just as much energy as the first. Despite being 3 goals down, Forfar didn’t give up and pushed for a goal, but it was Tayport who continued to dominate the match. A foul on Gill meant Tayport had an early free kick. Paterson took it but his shot fell straight to Shaw who easily caught the ball. Another free kick not long later was taken by Joyce. The ball went into the box where it was cleared by Graham, but the ball then fell to Craig Sturrock on the edge of the box who took a shot but it went over the crossbar. Substitute Ewan White also had his own chance not long after coming off the bench, but his strike also went over the crossbar.

Tayports 4th goal came 68 minutes into the match. A fantastic Gill throw in found Dorovic in the box who headed the ball down towards the net where it deflected off of Forfar’s Aidan Marshall and was ruled as an own goal. Only 3 minutes later, Sludden’s powerful strike from just outside the box flew into the goal and made the score 0-5.

A Kieran Sturrock corner a few minutes later gave McColm a chance but his header was hit out by Shaw for another Tayport corner. This time, Sludden took the corner and Kieran Sturrock easily headed it into the back of the net for Tayport’s 6th and final goal in the 75th minute.

Even though they were comfortably leading, Tayport continued to push for more goals. A Dorovic free kick 10 minutes from the end of the match was punched away by Shaw and the corner that followed was easily cleared by Forfar’s Connor Birse. Cobb also had a chance but it was saved by Shaw who had made some fantastic saves this match. Just before the full time whistle, Dorovic nearly made it 7 goals for Tayport but his goal was ruled as off side. A fantastic team effort from Tayport meant the club came away with a well-deserved 0-6 win.

Captain Jamie Hume was named as the Tayport Distillery Man of The Match. Manager Eddie Wolecki Black said he “delivered a Captains performance” and he “thoroughly deserved” the award. He also said it was a “really polished performance” by all the players and the “6 goals and a clean sheet” pleased him most.

Tayport will travel to Whitton Park to take on Broughty Athletic in the Semi Finals of the Quest Precision Engineering Cup on the 30th April.
