Tayport were back at The Canniepairt yesterday for another home game, this time against Arbroath Victoria. After 5 wins on the bounce, the Port were looking to keep this successful run going against a tough Vics side. It was game that showed both teams’ strengths and weaknesses and also one where the result could have gone either way - ultimately, however, with Tayport claiming the win.

It was a high tempo start for the home side but it was Arbroath Victoria who got the first goal of the match only 7 minutes in. A foul by Greg McColm on Scott Milne meant Vics had an early free kick from just outside the box. Sam Clark stepped up to take the shot and ball flew over the wall and Port keeper Darren Brown and into the back of the net, giving Arbroath the lead.

Despite their goal, it was Tayport who had more chances in the first half. Ryan Paterson and Luke O’Brien both had shots on goal, however, both times the ball flew just over the cross bar. Captain Jamie Hume also had a chance from a Paterson corner but his header was just too wide of the post. Just before half time, Arbroath had a chance to double their lead from a Clark corner, but the ball was well cleared from the box by defender McColm. The whistle blew for half time and the visitors were 1-0 up.

The second half began and the Port were showing much more determination and passion than the first 45 minutes. Callum Walls lobbed the ball into the box were it found Hume who headed the ball towards the net but it was easily caught by Vics keeper Arran Lyall. Chances from Kieran Sturrock and Paterson also came close to a Tayport goal but both were well cleared by Vics’ defence.

However, in the 66th minute, Tayport finally got their goal. A Paterson free kick found the feet of Craig Sturrock in the box. Sturrock then cut the ball across the box to Hume who then slotted the ball into the net. The score was now 1-1. Then, only 10 minutes later in the 76th minute, Tayport took the lead. Paterson crossed the ball into the box, where it was flicked on to McColm by Kyle McMulkin. McColm slid in and tapped the ball home.

Only 5 minutes before the end of the match, Arbroath received a free kick from a dangerous position on the edge of the box. Dale Riddell stepped up and took the shot but the ball was well blocked by Tayport’s wall. A couple of minutes later, Arbroath went down to 10 men. A bad challenge on Paterson meant Morgan Smith received a straight red card.

2 minutes into added time and Tayport sealed their win. Paterson chipped the ball to Kieran Sturrock who ran into the box and slipped the ball under the arm of Lyall who had dived to make the save. The full time whistle was blown and Tayport celebrated their 3-1 victory and their 6th consecutive win.

Manager Daryl McKenzie said he was “really happy to keep the winning run going” although “we were definitely made to work for the victory by a very well organised and hardworking Arbroath Vics team”. He also commented about the “great play between Ryan Paterson and Kieran Sturrock” for the third goal and he also mentioned how “it’s the first time we’ve actually won a game having to come from behind”.

McKenzie gave a special mention to both Kyle McMulkin and Nik Edwards who came on as second half substitutes. He said “young Kyle McMulkin really made a massive difference to the game with his touch and his quality” and he was also pleased with Nik’s “direct running style and dribbling”. McKenzie was very impressed with how both substitutes “impacted the game”.

Young Striker Kyle McMulkin received the Tayport Distillery Man of the Match award.
