Tayport FC were looking to make it 4 wins on the run as they welcomed Dundee Downfield to the Canniepairt this weekend. The sun was out and there was a great crowd turnout. It was a game full of yellow cards and, like the past few matches, a more energetic second half from Tayport. Paul Sludden kicked off for the home side in a game that would see Tayport’s first goal only 6 minutes into the match. A superb Ryan Paterson shot from outside of the box flew straight past Downfield’s keeper Jonny Snowdon and into his net. Another similar chance came from Ewan White only a few minutes later, but his strike went just wide of the post. A Jamie McCabe pass to Craig Sturrock was another opportunity for the home side, but Sturrock’s cross into the box was caught by Snowden. Dundee Downfield also started well with many of their own chances. Callum McCleary took a shot but the ball went over the crossbar. The visitors also had the chance to level through Corey Gray but his shot was easily caught by Tayport keeper Gary Thain, who was playing his first game of the year. However the equaliser came in the 26th minute of the match through a strike from Callum McCleary. Tayport struggled to create more chances after conceding. Downfield had many more opportunities but Tayport defender Greg McColm made some fantastic defensive clearances in the box. The last chance of the first half came for the home side. A throw in from Bradie Heggie found Paterson who had a great cross into the box, but unfortunately no one was there to take a shot. The first half finished with both teams even at 1-1. Tayport came out the much stronger side for the second half. Only 3 minutes after the kick off, Daniel Dorovic put the home side back into the lead. A good tackle from Sludden gave Tayport back the possession of the ball. He then quickly passed to Dorovic who slipped the ball into Downfield’s net. 10 minutes later, Tayport had another great opportunity to extend their lead. A pass from McCabe to Sludden was a good chance but Sludden’s shot was tipped over the crossbar by Downfield’s Snowden. This resulted in a corner for the home side in which McColm had a great header, but it went too high over the bar. A slip-up by Snowden left an open goal for Sludden, who chased the ball into the box, but the Downfield keeper managed to save his shot last minute, putting it out for a corner. Tayport got their final goal in the 79th minute. A Paterson corner straight into the box bounced off several heads before the ball then fell to Jamie Gill, whose shot slipped through Downfield’s defence and rolled over the line. Tayport’s final chance came through substitute Kieran Sturrock. A Gill free kick was met with a fantastic header from Sturrock, however, his shot was caught by Snowden. The game ended with a 3-1 win for Tayport. Ryan Paterson was awarded the Tayport Distillery Man of the Match award. Manager Eddie Wolecki Black was happy with the decision saying Paterson put in a “really good performance” and “worked his socks off”. He was also impressed with the team as a whole as he’d asked them to get 9 points from the 3 games this week and they had done just that.
