Tayport Walking Football Update
From Paul Berg – Tayport Walking Football Coordinator
Last Sunday, May 1st, saw us in league action at the Regional Performance Centre in Dundee. Over the past month or so, we have been hit with a few injuries to players, plus both of our regular keepers were unavailable, so a new keeper was drafted in at the last minute. Having to play 4 games this session didn’t help either, and in our first game we faced Raith Rover’s, a side we had never beaten, and who were runners up in the league last season. After going 1-0 up, we lost our leading scorer, Colin, with a badly twisted ankle, which ruled him out for the rest of the day. That left us with just one substitute player, but nevertheless we went on to win 3-0, a very encouraging performance and result. Scorers: Alan, Bert & Andy. We weren’t involved in the 2nd round of games, but in round 3 we faced Saints in the Community. Despite having the majority of the play, we once again struggled to find the back of the net, but eventually scored and went on to win 2-0. Scorers: Fergie & another for Andy. Straight into round 4, where we were up against St. Andrews, always a tough side to beat. Again, despite having the best chances, we failed to take advantage, in fact we hit the woodwork 5 times in total! Eventually we took the lead, and set about getting a second, but a dubious refereeing decision gave St. Andrews a penalty and we were level again. With time running out, we got the winning goal, and won 2-1. Scorers: Bert & Alan (his second of the afternoon) Again, no rest time, and our 4th and final game against league champions and unbeaten league leaders, St. James! We started well, but as the game went on, fatigue crept in, especially as our opponents hadn’t played a game in over 30 minutes. It’s no excuse but we finished up getting well beaten 4-0, but the score doesn’t reflect the fact that we matched them for periods, and they remain unbeaten. MALLORCA, SPAIN WALKING FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT, MAY 19 - 23. The club has entered a team in the above tournament, and John Boyle has organised all the travel and hotel arrangements. All the 8 players have self-financed the trip, and will face teams from all European countries. Their first game is against Leyton Orient’s Walking Football side. FRIDAY MAY 20th: Due to the above tournament, we intend to cancel training and have another session of Footgolf at Drumoig Golf Centre, weather permitting. SUNDAY JUNE 5th. Next league session, we play 2 league games and 1 friendly. First game 2:30, usual venue, Regional Performance Centre, Dundee.
